Passengers and local workers have expressed anger and frustration after unauthorized drone activity forced further flight cancellations at Jersey Airport for a second consecutive night. The disruption began at 20:05 on Saturday when airport authorities reported that inbound flights were affected by drone activity near the airfield.
Police Investigation and Official Warning
States of Jersey Police launched an investigation into the incidents and urged anyone with relevant information to contact them. Insp Rob McCallum stated that investigators believe two or three drones entered the restricted airspace, though authorities do not suspect any connection to terrorism.
Senator Lyndon Farnham, the Chief Minister of Jersey, emphasized that flying a drone near an airport is neither a harmless hobby nor a prank. Senator Farnham warned those responsible that they would face the full consequences of the law if identified.
Impact on Passengers and Local Workers
Pacific Basirwe was at the airport waiting for his wife and young son to arrive on a flight from London Heathrow when the latest cancellations were announced. He called for stricter regulations and prosecution for the individuals involved, noting that the repeated disruptions over two consecutive days required decisive action to prevent future occurrences.
Richard De La Haye, a taxi driver with more than 40 years of experience, explained that the unauthorized flights were harming local transport business. He described the situation as a nightmare that leaves drivers uncertain about whether to wait or leave, noting that the ongoing disruption needs an urgent resolution.
