Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto de Zerbi took a surprisingly calm approach following his side’s 1-0 defeat by Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday. Much of the pre-match and post-match focus centered on referee John Brooks’ decision not to send off Leeds defender Jayden Bogle for a late challenge on Mathys Tel during the first half.
The Controversial Challenge and VAR Review
The incident occurred while the match was still goalless, with Tottenham controlling the tempo. Bogle caught Tel with his studs in a challenge that forced the French forward off the field with a bruised left foot. A lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check lasting more than four minutes took place, but no further action was taken against Bogle, and referee Brooks did not review the incident at the pitchside monitor.
Former Premier League assistant referee Darren McCann told BBC Sport that Bogle’s challenge met the criteria for serious foul play because it endangered an opponent’s safety, adding that the defender was fortunate to stay on the pitch. Former Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown told BBC Radio 5 Live that the outcome would generate significant debate.
VAR Tony Harrington ultimately confirmed the on-field decision of no red card, telling Brooks that the tackle featured a lack of speed and constituted a reckless challenge. Because Brooks had not initially cautioned Bogle, the defender escaped without any punishment, as VAR cannot intervene to recommend a yellow card.
De Zerbi Accepts Performance Shortcomings
Following the lengthy stoppage, Tottenham lost their composure and momentum, allowing Leeds to outplay them in the second half. De Zerbi refused to pin the blame solely on the officiating, admitting to TNT Sports that his team deserved to lose after the break.
“We deserved to lose the game in the second half and didn’t play like we can,” De Zerbi said. “It’s a journey for us because we can learn from this game. I am sorry for the performance in the second half – we didn’t play like a top team. We didn’t have the right character and physicality in the second half.”
Frustrations boiled over early in the second half when defender Pedro Porro and De Zerbi were booked simultaneously following a challenge. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, the Italian manager expressed full confidence in the referee and VAR system despite questioning the yellow card shown to Porro.
