Thomas Tuchel’s decision to exclude Cole Palmer from the latest England squad has cast significant doubt over the 24-year-old’s international future. The England head coach stated that the Chelsea playmaker has missed too many opportunities to impress, signaling that he currently sits outside the manager’s primary plans.
Tuchel’s Blunt Assessment
Tuchel’s explanation for the omission was direct, emphasizing that he prefers to stick with the group of players who participated in the previous camp. “He misses too many opportunities to impress,” Tuchel said, noting that while he believes every player is desperate to represent their country, the competition for places is intense. The manager added that the decision was not personal, but rather a reflection of the extraordinary impact made by the squad during their last two-and-a-half-week period together.
The exclusion comes despite assurances that Palmer was fully fit and available for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain. Tuchel has opted to call up Fulham’s Josh King and Borussia Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham instead, further complicating the path back for Palmer, who has earned 14 caps for his country since his debut in November 2023.
A Shift in the Pecking Order
Palmer’s standing within the national team has fluctuated significantly. Once viewed as a key part of England’s future—highlighted by his goal in the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain—he has struggled to maintain a consistent role. Since Tuchel took charge, Palmer has featured in only three of the manager’s 26 matches. He has been surpassed in the pecking order by players such as Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White, Eberechi Eze, and the newly called-up King.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that the club and the national team had communicated regarding Palmer’s fitness, noting that the player had been dealing with discomfort prior to the international break. Alonso, who has not discussed the England snub with the player, maintained that his focus remains on helping Palmer become more influential at the club level. “I am very happy with his quality, with his attitude and the impact he is having with the rest of the team,” Alonso stated.
The Road to Redemption
Tuchel has established a reputation for making difficult, sentiment-free decisions, previously excluding high-profile stars like Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold during his tenure. For Palmer, the challenge is now to prove his worth in a system where the coach has shown a clear preference for those who have already demonstrated their value in recent camps.
Having recently reached the milestone of 50 league goals for Chelsea in 105 appearances, Palmer’s club form remains strong. However, he now faces a lengthy period of uncertainty, as the next England squad is not scheduled to be named until March 2027.
