Chinese space officials revealed public details regarding a comprehensive plan to land the nation’s astronauts on the Moon before 2030.
Lunar Exploration Timeline and Strategy
During the Seventh Manned Spaceflight Conference in Beijing, officials including lunar exploration program chief designer Wang Xiang outlined the mission roadmap leading up to the crewed lunar landing. China’s approach relies on a lunar-orbit rendezvous comparable to the historic Apollo program executed by NASA. Because the nation lacks a launch vehicle as massive as the Saturn V, the crew and the lunar lander will journey to the Moon on separate launches.
Information shared via social media slides indicates the upcoming test flights and mission schedule begin with an uncrewed test of the single-stick Long March 10A rocket and the Mengzhou spacecraft into low-Earth orbit targeted for early 2027. This will be followed in 2028 by an uncrewed test of the heavier Long March 10 rocket featuring a core stage and two boosters alongside the Lanyue lunar lander, which will include descent and ascent tests from the lunar surface. By 2029, the program plans a concurrent launch of two Long March 10 rockets carrying an uncrewed Mengzhou and the Lanyue vehicle to dock in lunar orbit. Finally, a dual launch utilizing Long March 10 rockets carrying a human crew aboard the Mengzhou spacecraft is scheduled for before 2030.
Mission Details and Global Competition
The public availability of this schedule establishes a clear benchmark to track China’s technological advancements as it aims to land humans on the lunar surface ahead of the United States. Current mission blueprints leave out a crewed flyby or lunar orbit mission similar to Apollo 8 or Artemis II. Instead, the Mengzhou vehicle will undergo crewed testing in missions servicing the Tiangong space station in low-Earth orbit.
NASA currently maintains a target to return humans to the Moon by 2028, preceding China’s timeline by roughly a year. The United States continues to rely on a more mature infrastructure built around the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft, which have been in development for over a decade.
