Apple Releases iOS 27.2 to Patch Over 140 Security Flaws

Apple released iOS 27.2 on Monday, Oct. 26, shortly after launching the iPhone Duo. Alongside expanding Siri AI to additional languages, the new software update addresses 141 bug and security issues, including vulnerabilities that could grant third parties access to personal data or device commands.

Critical Security Fixes in iOS 27.2

According to Apple’s release notes, the update resolves dozens of system vulnerabilities, several of which pose serious risks to device stability and user data. Nine of the patched bugs involve kernel corruption issues that can cause the operating system to freeze or crash entirely. Furthermore, seven addressed bugs could potentially lead to arbitrary code execution, which might allow malicious third parties to steal data or exploit the hardware. Additional patches include a fix for a vulnerability triggered by connecting malicious USB accessories. While Apple noted no evidence of active exploitation for these specific flaws, users are advised to install the update promptly for optimal protection.

Unusual Volume of Software Patches

Despite covering 141 issues, iOS 27.2 actually represents a slight decrease in patches compared to the previous month’s iOS 27 update, which fixed 157 bugs. These high figures mark an unusual trend based on historical data from previous years. During the iOS 26 cycle, the highest number of bug fixes in a single update reached 88 with iOS 26.6, while iOS 18.4 previously peaked at 75 patches.

Apple has not provided an explanation for the recent surge in bug fixes. Although artificial intelligence is frequently utilized to detect and resolve software errors, company documentation does not link AI directly to the high volume of fixes in iOS 27 or iOS 27.2. Apple’s release notes mention OpenAI four times and Anthropic’s Claude three times, though specific mentions of AI assistance in bug discovery are not detailed.

Users can download iOS 27.2 immediately by navigating to Settings, selecting General, choosing Software Update, and following the on-screen instructions.
