Alphabet is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial results after the market closes on Wednesday. Wall Street analysts surveyed by LSEG expect earnings per share of $3.02 and total revenue of $128.2 billion.

Growth and Market Pressures

Anticipated revenue represents a 25% increase compared to the same period last year, marking the fastest quarterly growth rate since 2021. However, the upcoming financial report comes during a volatile period on Wall Street as investors express increasing anxiety over the high costs associated with artificial intelligence development.

Alphabet shares declined in five out of the six trading sessions leading up to Tuesday and have fallen roughly 7% during October. In July, the technology giant raised its full-year capital expenditure forecast to a range between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from a previous maximum estimate of $190 billion, while simultaneously reporting negative free cash flow for the first time.

Infrastructure Spending and Cloud Expansion

FactSet consensus estimates project third-quarter capital expenditures to surge by 130% year-over-year to $55.2 billion. Analysts anticipate that annual capital expenditures will surpass $200 billion before climbing above $300 billion by 2027. Additionally, analysts forecast negative free cash flow of $2.27 billion for the third quarter, with that deficit expected to widen over the subsequent four quarters.

Despite heavy spending, Google’s cloud division is projected to generate 90% revenue growth to reach $28.7 billion, capturing market share from competitors Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Microsoft is scheduled to release its earnings report on Wednesday, with Amazon following on Thursday.

Core Search and AI Strategy

Google is actively integrating its Gemini models into enterprise solutions while increasing sales of custom tensor processing units designed to compete with Nvidia graphics processing units. Concurrently, the company faces mounting competition in its core search business from rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside a growing number of new market agents.

Analysts at Citizens noted in a recent report that while the company maintains a strong position in artificial intelligence, execution risks remain and rising competition from search agents presents new challenges.

Company executives are set to host a conference call with analysts at 4:30 p.m. ET.
