Sony has unveiled a new collection of colorful, translucent cosmetics for its PlayStation consoles and controllers. Announced on Wednesday, the Prism collection introduces three new color options that bring back a nostalgic, transparent technology aesthetic.

The Prism Collection Details

The new accessories are available in Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray, though the gray option appears more blue visually. Customers can purchase Sony’s DualSense PlayStation 5 controllers in the Prism design or choose matching PS5 console covers.

On the controllers, translucent plastic wraps around nearly the entire frame to give users a view of the internal components. For the console covers, the transparency is more restricted, allowing buyers to see only the cooling fan and a few other internal parts.

Pricing and Availability

The Prism Collection DualSense wireless controllers are priced at $85, while the matching console covers cost $75. Preorders are scheduled to begin on November 10, with official shipping starting on February 4.

These price points sit on the higher end, roughly matching existing specialized controllers and covers. Basic color controllers on the PlayStation website start at $74, and standard covers start around $59, with more colorful options increasing from there.

The Transparent Tech Trend

The see-through style was largely popularized by Apple’s original iMac and became a major design trend during the early 2000s in devices like the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo’s Game Boy Color. Over twenty years later, the aesthetic is experiencing a revival, appearing across various modern products including gaming handhelds, massage devices, and a pair of transparent earbuds from Sony.

The nostalgic focus on clear hardware arrives alongside a shift away from physical media. In July, Sony announced a decision to end production of physical game discs starting in 2028, a move criticized by ownership advocates who point out that digital game purchases do not grant true ownership under Sony’s terms of service.
