Apple Expected to Reveal Touchscreen MacBook at Pro Event

Apple is anticipated to finally unveil a touchscreen MacBook at its upcoming “Pro and Tell” event. This move marks a major shift away from the company’s previous firm stance against touch-enabled laptops, which was famously criticized by former CEO Steve Jobs in 2010 and current CEO Tim Cook in 2012.

Expected Hardware and Design Changes

According to rumors reported by The Verge, the upcoming touch-enabled MacBook Pro will feature a new OLED display to deliver deep blacks and vivid color contrast, though this addition is expected to increase the price above the current starting cost of $2,499 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model. The devices are rumored to run on M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and remain available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. Additionally, the screen is speculated to replace the traditional notch with a Dynamic Island cutout for the webcam, potentially enabling touch-based multitasking features similar to those found on iPhones. Rumors also point to a thinner and lighter chassis design, though this raises concerns about potential performance or battery compromises.

Software Integration and Interaction

It remains unclear whether the new device will maintain a conventional clamshell design or adopt a flexible hinge similar to 2-in-1 convertible laptops. The Verge noted it is also uncertain if the laptop will support an Apple Pencil with magnetic charging or remain strictly touch-only. Regardless of the physical interaction design, the device will run a revised version of macOS with touch-friendly enhancements tailored specifically for the new hardware while retaining its identity as a full desktop operating system.

The new OLED touchscreen model represents the biggest shakeup for the MacBook Pro line since the M1 generation was introduced in 2021, with Apple set to reveal its official approach to touch interaction on a Mac.
