Democrat Leads in Shocking Mississippi US Senate Race

Democrat Scott Colom, a district attorney, is leading Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by a little more than 1,800 votes in the shockingly competitive US Senate race in Mississippi.

Counting Continues Amid Mail-in Ballot Rules

With 96% of the vote counted, the Associated Press has not yet called the contest. State law permits mail-in ballots to be counted as long as they are postmarked by election day and received within five business days, meaning the final result might not arrive until early next week.

A victory for Colom would represent an astonishing defeat for a senator serving her first full term within a state where a Democrat has not secured a US Senate seat since 1982. Furthermore, Colom would become the first Black senator from Mississippi since the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War, despite Donald Trump winning the Magnolia State by 22 points in 2024.
