U.S. Economy Adds 165,000 Jobs in October

The U.S. job market accelerated last month as employers added 165,000 jobs in October, according to a Labor Department report released on Friday. The unemployment rate decreased to 4.1% from 4.2% in the previous month.

Job Gains and Wage Growth

Employment figures for August and September experienced upward revisions, totaling an additional 84,000 jobs. Sectors that contributed to job growth last month included health care, manufacturing, and business services. Conversely, restaurants and construction companies reduced their workforce during the same period.

Average wages in October rose 3.1% compared to a year earlier, signaling a strengthening job market with slightly larger wage gains. Although this annual increase exceeded the previous month’s rate, it likely remains insufficient to match rising living costs.

Inflation Pressures and Economic Impact

Inflation reached 3.7% in September, with the cost of living outpacing wage increases for a significant portion of the year. This trend stems from a war with Iran that caused a steep increase in energy prices.

According to Cory Stahle, an economist at the Indeed job-search website, workers are losing ground, and the longer this situation continues, the more acutely they will experience the impact. Voter frustration regarding elevated prices played a major role in the midterm elections, resulting in Republicans losing their majorities in both the House and Senate.

The unemployment rate stays at a historically low level, enabling the Federal Reserve to concentrate on combating inflation. Although the central bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged, investors anticipate an interest rate hike by policymakers during the December meeting.
