Wrexham Chief Executive Michael Williamson Departs After Two Years

Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson has left the club after serving in the role for two years, with director Shaun Harvey stepping in as the acting CEO.

Departure After Promotion Success

Williamson arrived at the North Wales club in 2024 and departs following a tenure that included the team’s promotion from League One into the Championship under the ownership of co-chairmen Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

In a joint statement, the co-chairmen expressed their gratitude to Williamson for his efforts in helping the club ascend rapidly through the English football league structure. “We thank Michael Williamson for his two years at Wrexham and for his work taking the club from League One to the Championship,” the co-chairmen stated.

McElhenney and Reynolds added, “Since our takeover five years ago, Wrexham have had historic success on the pitch and won hearts all over the globe. We remain focused on our most important task: to make the Wrexham community proud.”

Stadium Development and Leadership Transition

During his time with the club, Williamson oversaw infrastructure projects, including expansion work at the Racecourse ground via the installation of the new Kop stand. However, the organization also encountered recent scrutiny after receiving a fine from the English Football League for naming ineligible players in matchday squads.

Shaun Harvey, who previously served as chief executive for both the English Football League and Leeds United, has maintained involvement with Wrexham’s executive board as an advisor since the Hollywood actors finalized their acquisition of the team in 2021.

Although Harvey had earlier relinquished some responsibilities during a boardroom restructure at the beginning of the campaign to serve as a non-executive director, he will now assume Williamson’s duties on an interim basis. The club has not yet indicated a timeline for naming a permanent replacement.

Addressing the leadership change, McElhenney and Reynolds noted, “Shaun Harvey has been an integral part of this journey from the beginning, and we know Shaun will give every support to Phil Parkinson and the lads on the pitch while keeping the broader Wrexham community roaring us on.”
