Every iPhone user has experienced the frustration of an incoming call ringing at an inconvenient moment without an obvious way to dismiss it. The reason behind this interface change is remarkably straightforward and depends entirely on the device’s status when the call arrives.

Understanding the Incoming Call Screen

When an iPhone is locked, incoming calls display the slide-to-answer control instead of separate accept and decline buttons. Conversely, when the device is unlocked, users receive both options to answer or decline the call on the screen.

Depending on individual Incoming Calls settings, these buttons can appear either in a compact banner or across the entire screen, but both choices remain present. This behavior is the default setup straight out of the box, meaning users have not accidentally disabled anything, and adjustments can be made through the settings menu.

Alternative Ways to Manage Calls

Physical buttons offer a quick way to handle calls without needing an on-screen button. Pressing the side button twice rapidly declines the call and sends the caller directly to voicemail, while pressing either volume button silences the ring without rejecting the call, regardless of whether the screen is locked.

Rejecting a call can sometimes feel impolite, but the iPhone interface includes a Message option that allows users to send a text instead of answering. When a call pops up as a banner during other tasks, tapping the banner reveals additional options, including pre-made replies or custom text messages to provide context to the caller.

Users can also customize these pre-written responses in advance by navigating to Settings, Apps, Phone, and Respond with Text, where individual replies can be edited to fit specific needs.

Dealing With Unwanted Callers

Telemarketers and robocalls remain a frequent nuisance, with the Federal Trade Commission recording more than 2.6 million Do Not Call complaints in fiscal year 2025. To block persistent numbers, users can locate the unwanted call in their Recents list, tap the number or the Info button, scroll to the bottom, and select Block Caller.

Broader settings are also available to screen unknown callers by going to Settings, Apps, Phone, and Screen Unknown Callers on iOS 26 and later. Users can choose between setting options to never screen, asking the reason for calling, or silencing unknown numbers entirely so they go straight to voicemail without ringing.
