A Wizz Air passenger flight travelling from London Luton Airport to Sofia was escorted by a Hungarian fighter jet to Budapest following a mid-air bomb threat.
Emergency Landing and Security Checks
The aircraft was forced to execute an emergency landing at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport. A Wizz Air spokesperson stated that local authorities conducted all necessary security checks on the aircraft and passengers immediately after touchdown.
The airline later confirmed that the inspection had been completed and nothing was found, adding that the plane would resume its journey shortly. Flight tracking data from FlightAware showed that Wizz Air flight 4302 departed Luton at 08:33 GMT, heading toward the Bulgarian capital before landing in Budapest at 12:09 local time.
Fighter Jet Escort
Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendis confirmed that the country provided a fighter jet to escort the aircraft. Writing on social media, the minister explained that the flight requested permission to land in Budapest after receiving the bomb threat.
A Hungarian Defence Forces Gripen fighter jet took off within minutes to provide an escort for the passenger aircraft. Once the landing was complete, the jet returned to its base while local police took charge of the situation.
Wizz Air reported that the plane taxied to a designated stand upon landing for the security procedures to take place. The airline stated that it is cooperating fully with the authorities and emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew remains its highest priority.
