Kimi Antonelli qualified in fourth place for the Mexico City Grand Prix, putting the 20-year-old Mercedes driver in a strong position to secure his maiden Formula 1 world championship. However, the Italian’s performance was overshadowed on Saturday as Lewis Hamilton claimed his first pole position for Ferrari and the 105th of his career, as reported by BBC Sport.

Qualifying and Title Scenarios

Hamilton narrowly beat his former Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 0.009 seconds to secure his first pole since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. Mathematically, only Russell and Hamilton can prevent Antonelli from sealing the title during the race. Antonelli needs to finish at least ninth if Russell wins, or 10th if Hamilton takes the victory.

Hamilton stated that the championship battle was not on his mind, noting that his team’s focus was on achieving the best possible result and holding onto second place in the Constructors’ Championship. Russell described Antonelli’s impending championship as inevitable and stated his own priority was finishing the season strongly.

Antonelli ended up fifth fastest in qualifying, 0.184 seconds behind Russell, before moving up to fourth on the grid due to a grid penalty for Max Verstappen. The Italian driver admitted that the high stakes had affected his confidence and made him more tense than usual, though he planned to refocus with friends and family.

Hamilton’s Milestone and Form

For Hamilton, his pole position on his 43rd start for Ferrari marked a significant high point following a difficult debut season with the team last year. The seven-time champion addressed questions regarding his age and form, stating that his latest achievement demonstrated he still has what it takes at 40 years old.

Hamilton holds an eight-point lead over team-mate Charles Leclerc in the championship standings, with a 12-10 head-to-head qualifying record. Despite losing track time in second practice due to a mechanical breakdown, Hamilton expressed optimism for the race while acknowledging the challenge ahead.

The Race Ahead

Antonelli needs only a solid finish to break the record for the youngest-ever title winner by over three years. Nevertheless, risks remain on the lengthy 800-meter run to the first corner in Mexico City, where drivers on the second row have historically utilized the slipstream to gain positions.

Reflecting on Antonelli’s impending achievement, Hamilton praised the young driver’s phenomenal season and bright future. Hamilton expressed hope that Ferrari could provide a closer competitive challenge on track next season.

The Mexico City Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, with Hamilton and Russell starting on the front row and Antonelli lining up alongside Leclerc on the second row.
