Duncan Ferguson will make his debut as Glentoran manager six days later than originally scheduled in a challenging away fixture against league leaders Coleraine. The match at the Showgrounds will be broadcast live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website under the Friday night lights.
Challenging Start Against In-Form Leaders
Coleraine experienced their only defeat of the season at home against Linfield last month but quickly recovered with four consecutive victories. That strong run established a two-point lead over the Blues at the top of the standings, which the Bannsiders can expand with a victory on Friday.
After a waterlogged pitch forced the postponement of Glentoran’s match against Ballymena United, Ferguson attended Crusaders’ 5-0 defeat against Ruaidhri Higgins’ side at Seaview to observe his opponents firsthand. Glentoran enter the fixture 14 points behind Coleraine following a difficult start to the campaign, though they are currently on a five-game unbeaten run in the league since losing 2-1 to the Bannsiders at the Oval.
Tactical Approach and Squad Outlook
That positive sequence, which featured four wins and a draw under joint interim managers Tim McCann and Paddy McCourt, lifted the Glens to fourth place in the table. A triumph at the Showgrounds would draw them level on points with Larne and demonstrate Ferguson’s capability in the Irish Premiership despite his unfamiliarity with the division.
Ferguson previously managed Forest Green Rovers and Inverness, and has spent a week and a half preparing his new squad following his appointment on 19 October. During his opening press conference, he emphasized building a team that will “really run, run and run.”
He noted that while Glentoran share the joint best defensive record in the league by conceding only 10 goals in 12 matches, the team has “lacked in creating chances” and must adopt an “attacking football” style. The team’s 16 goals scored this season—15 fewer than Coleraine—may receive a boost from the return to full fitness of star striker Pat Hoban.
Coleraine manager Higgins noted that his own squad “might be a bit of a sideshow” given the intense focus surrounding the Scottish coach. Friday’s encounter promises to be a significant moment in the Irish League, setting up an absorbing narrative for the remainder of the domestic season.
