Front gardens can serve as a primary defense against air pollution and rising summer temperatures, according to a year-long field study conducted across two London neighborhoods. Researchers investigated eight gardens located near busy roads to measure how vegetation impacts local air quality and microclimates.
The Benefits of Vegetation in Urban Gardens
The research revealed that gardens featuring hedges and abundant plant life recorded the lowest particle pollution levels. The most effective garden showed up to 80 percent lower particle pollution compared to paved alternatives, while grassy lawns also maintained consistently low pollution levels.
Hedges, shrubs, and trees redirect airflow coming from nearby roads and filter the air by catching particles on foliage. Furthermore, leaves absorb gaseous pollutants through their microscopic pores. Although these green spaces shielded residences from local traffic emissions, they provided less protection during spring when agricultural pollution traveled widely from rural areas.
Combating Heat and Managing Paved Spaces
Paved gardens suffered from both the highest pollution levels and the highest temperatures, running up to 6C hotter in the summer than heavily vegetated plots. Prof Prashant Kumar from the University of Surrey, who coordinated the research, noted that the cooling advantage stands out significantly during recent hot British summers and warm nights.
According to Kumar, maintaining front garden plants improves local air quality near residences, which likely reduces the amount of pollution entering indoor spaces. Dr Karina Corada-Pérez from the University of East London, the study’s lead author, acknowledged the growing pressure homeowners face to pave their properties for off-street parking or low-maintenance convenience.
Corada-Pérez emphasized the importance of designing spaces that accommodate household necessities while preserving plant life. The researchers called for official guidance and financial incentives to balance parking and accessibility with the environmental and health advantages of maintaining green front gardens.
