Google Gemini users can now generate, preview, and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code directly inside Gemini chats. These new file editing features rolled out starting today for all users, with PDF previews and editing functioning on both web and mobile platforms, while all other file formats remain exclusive to the web version for the time being.
Direct Editing and Full-Screen Mode
Google previously introduced support for generating and downloading files within Gemini earlier this year. With the latest update, users can modify those files without ever leaving the Gemini application. According to Google, users can expand documents to work on them in a full-screen mode.
Additionally, users can highlight text inside files to ask Gemini specific questions or prompt the AI to implement changes. For instance, a user can highlight a table and instruct Gemini to transform it into a graph.
Existing Integrations and Competitor Features
Prior to this update, users could already edit files using Gemini through Google’s Workspace integrations, such as the Gemini side panel within Google Docs. The update brings similar capabilities directly into the conversational interface. Meanwhile, competitor Anthropic introduced a comparable feature earlier this year, enabling users to generate and edit documents and presentations directly inside Claude chats.
