US Launches Limited Strikes on Iran Ahead of Midterms

The United States has launched military strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, according to US officials speaking to BBC partner CBS. Iranian state news agency IRNA reported multiple explosions on the island on Monday.

Response to Attack and Political Context

US officials characterized the strikes as limited and stated they were carried out in retaliation for the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps firing on a US aircraft. The BBC has reached out to US Central Command for comment. The military action occurs immediately prior to the US midterm elections, which will decide control of Congress between Republicans and Democrats.

Donald Trump has faced declining polling figures and internal party pressure to conclude the conflict, which started in February when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Earlier on Monday, Trump mentioned to reporters that he was in no rush to escalate military operations against the country. He told Axios that they crippled Iran financially, noting that the nation lacks money and gasoline while its citizens grow weary.

Potential Nuclear Site Targets and Diplomacy

In an interview with Fox News on the eve of the midterm elections, Trump indicated that the US might need to target Pickaxe, a facility associated with Iran’s nuclear program. He remarked that the action was not a significant challenge and could be accomplished in one hour. Addressing speculation about major strikes resuming after the elections, Trump told a reporter on Monday that no such plan was in place.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed IRNA that very intensive negotiations to stop the war are currently taking place with the US through intermediaries. He stated that Tehran is prepared for both diplomatic and military outcomes more than ever before, adding that the choice rests with the US between a wise negotiation path and the mistake of military aggression.
