The jury in Russell Brand’s rape and sexual assault trial has retired to consider its verdicts. The 51-year-old comedian faces seven offences involving six women in allegations that span a 10-year period starting in 1999, and he maintains his innocence regarding all charges.
Trial Proceedings and Judge Instructions
During the three-week trial at Southwark crown court, prosecutors characterized the comedian as a ruthless, calculated, and manipulative sexual predator. Addressing the panel of eight men and four women, Mr Justice Bennathan stated that he could only accept a unanimous decision from all 12 jurors.
The judge had previously commenced summing up the evidence presented in the case by reviewing every individual count listed on the indictment. Brand faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of attempted indecent assault, which was amended from an initial allegation of indecent assault.
Closing Arguments from Prosecution and Defense
During her closing speech, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC emphasized that the six complainants did not know one another and came forward to report a consistent pattern of behavior. She noted that the women had nothing to gain, sought no publicity, did not participate in any documentary, and filed no compensation claims.
Defense barrister Ian Winter KC countered in his closing speech that a Dispatches documentary focusing on the comedian’s alleged sexual misconduct had tainted the pursuit of justice. He further pointed to significant delays in the complainants reporting the matters to police and questioned the volume of accusations relative to the total number of sexual partners Brand had over the decade.
Brand arrived at the court accompanied by his wife, Laura Brand, and members of his entourage, offering no comment to the press.
