How to spot someone using AI glasses and hidden cameras

Smart glasses are rapidly growing in popularity, but their ability to record in public has raised valid concerns about stalking and unwanted surveillance. While these devices can be covert, everyday people can watch for specific physical traits, indicator lights, and behavioral signs to identify if someone is using them.

Recognizing smart glasses and recording signs

Smart glasses are generally easy to spot visually because their internal technology requires much thicker frames, particularly around the temples and the outer edges of the lenses where camera lenses are typically housed. Giveaway ports and grilles are often positioned further back on the design, and most models feature a small LED indicator light that illuminates when recording begins.

However, Engadget notes that low-cost duplicate glasses sold on platforms like Temu and TikTok Shop may lack recording lights, while audio-first models like Ray-Ban Meta Audio Glasses do not include cameras at all. Beyond physical hardware, observers can watch for suspicious behaviors, such as someone repeatedly pressing the temples of their eyewear, pausing to gaze into space as though reading an internal display, or murmuring quiet voice commands to themselves.

Using detection apps and responding safely

Technological defenses have also emerged to help counter hidden recording. Applications like Nearby Glasses and ZuckOff scan the surrounding area for nearby Bluetooth signals and specific device identifiers linked to AI eyewear. While these detection tools are not entirely foolproof—users may disable their Bluetooth, and false positives can occur—they can still act as an initial defense mechanism.

If someone near you arouses suspicion, immediate confrontation is discouraged. The safest approach is to step away from the individual and contact authorities if stalking or following is suspected. For confidential gatherings or meetings, organizers can establish a rule banning smart glasses, and any direct conversations with strangers regarding potential unauthorized recording should be handled calmly in public spaces.
