Getting a firsthand look at the iPhone Duo provided a remarkably different experience compared to watching early online videos and reading initial reviews. After spending time with a model at an Apple Store in Seattle, the device’s unique folding mechanics and software behaviors sparked second thoughts about whether it belongs in a pocket.

The Opening Animation and Design Appeal

The device’s opening effect stands out as a polished feature that carries a distinct touch of Apple whimsy. While standard phones easily handle everyday needs, the translucent window animation and interior glow demonstrate that a foldable device can offer an entirely different hardware experience rather than just a larger screen. CNET senior technology reporter Abrar Al-Heeti noted in her review that the high cost and limited availability highlight how the foldable format is not suited for everyone, yet noted she has no plans of returning to a traditional slab phone.

Multitasking and App Navigation

Operating the device requires learning a new gesture for split-screen multitasking on the 7.6-inch main display. Instead of a simple half-swipe from the bottom bringing up the split view, users must perform the half-swipe and then drag a finger toward either the left or right side of the screen, creating an experience similar to iPadOS SplitView. When the phone is open, home screen apps remain positioned on the right side while leaving the left side free, maintaining the visual style of the opening animation rather than abruptly filling the entire expansive display with icons.

Camera Features and Multi-Angle Poses

The camera setup utilizes four different lenses, including an under-display selfie camera and exterior main and ultrawide lenses. Using the front screen allows a subject to preview their framing while the photographer captures the shot, though a Slide to Open control prevents accidental activation. Furthermore, the device tracks various angles and positions that Apple terms poses, automatically adjusting content between horizontal and vertical orientations depending on how the hardware is folded.

Durability testing remains ongoing as CNET utilizes a custom-built machine named the Fold-a-Phone to measure how many times the foldable device can withstand being opened and closed.
