Although artificial intelligence tools and large language models continue to expand across digital services, very few consumers are using outside AI agents to order food through DoorDash. The company revealed that automated ordering represents an extremely small fraction of its overall transaction volume.
Low Volume for AI Orders
During a third-quarter earnings call, DoorDash co-founder and CEO Tony Xu answered an analyst question by stating that AI agents are generating several hundred orders on the platform since becoming operational. Ars Technica reported that Xu described this figure as a very low use case for a platform that processed nearly 1 billion orders in the third quarter of 2026 alone.
Xu explained that he sees potential for AI agents to assist with long consideration purchases and complex decisions where technology performs background work on behalf of users. However, Xu noted that for simple tasks like ordering food, consumers prefer to interact with DoorDash directly.
Recent Integration Launch
DoorDash introduced its Model Context Protocol connector less than a month prior to the earnings call. The connector offers a standardized and open method for third-party AI tools to place orders via the platform.
Without this specialized linkup, which remains restricted to a small group of early beta partners primarily focused on corporate lunch orders, AI agents must rely on web interfaces to access DoorDash.
