Labuschagne Slump Deepens as Australia’s Youngsters Shine

Marnus Labuschagne set a new unwanted record for an Australian top-order batsman during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. While his prolonged slump hit a new low, the younger members of the Australian squad stepped up to put their team in the ascendancy on day two.

Labuschagne Sets Unwanted Record

Labuschagne lasted just five deliveries without scoring on day two at Newlands, extending his drought without a Test century to 48 consecutive innings. Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie told ABC that the mark will likely never be broken because no player would be given that length of time again.

During the peak of his career following his introduction as a concussion substitute in the 2019 Ashes, Labuschagne averaged 65 in Test cricket. However, since scoring his last Test century at Old Trafford in 2023, his average has plummeted to 24.77, prompting former Australia captain Ricky Ponting to call for his exclusion in August.

Brought to the crease after Travis Head fell with Australia at 58-2 in response to South Africa’s first-innings total of 329, Labuschagne was trapped on the crease playing back to a full delivery from spinner Simon Harmer and edged to slip. Former Australia batter Simon Katich told SEN Radio that the dismissal reflected nerves and the extended pressure placed on the player by selectors.

Younger Batters Stepped Up

With Steve Smith sidelined due to a neck injury, Australia’s younger generation seized the opportunity to control the match. Matt Renshaw, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis all scored fifties to lift Australia to 330-4, holding a narrow lead of one run by the close of play.

Renshaw contributed 74 runs, following a career-best 190 in Durban, reinforcing his place in the side. Green, the 27-year-old all-rounder, displayed composure and authority to score 65 runs in his 40th Test appearance.

Inglis delivered the most striking performance after coming to the crease when Marco Jansen dismissed Renshaw and Green in successive overs before tea. The 31-year-old finished the day 85 not out, sharing an unbroken 145-run partnership with Alex Carey.

While Smith will eventually return for the upcoming series against New Zealand in December, altering the current batting lineup, day two demonstrated the potential value of transitioning to a younger generation as Labuschagne’s future remains uncertain.
