Apple AirPods remain a staple for everyday audio, but their internal batteries gradually lose capacity over extended use. While Apple does not publish an official expiration date for its earbuds, adopting good charging habits can help preserve battery health for several years, tech news outlet Engadget reported.
Battery Specs Across AirPods Models
Battery longevity varies across Apple’s lineup. The entry-level AirPods 5 provide up to four hours of playback on a single charge with Active Noise Cancellation turned on, while the companion case extends total listening time up to 20 hours. Choosing the AirPods 5 model equipped with a wireless charging case increases battery life by one extra hour in the earbuds and two additional hours through the case.
For longer usage, such as extended phone calls or long flights, the AirPods Pro 3 yield up to eight hours of listening time with noise cancellation enabled, reaching 24 hours total when using the case. Placing the Pro 3 or AirPods 5 earbuds into their case for five minutes supplies roughly one hour of additional playback time. Meanwhile, the over-ear AirPods Max 2 headphones deliver up to 20 hours of continuous use on a single charge.
Charging Methods and Preserving Battery Health
Standard AirPods recharge automatically when placed inside their case without requiring any manual controls. Cases connect to power using USB-C or Lightning cables, while selected models support wireless charging via MagSafe, Qi chargers, or Apple Watch charging pucks. As noted by Engadget, Apple does not include a charging cable in the package for AirPods 4 or newer models.
To slow down battery wear, modern AirPods include an Optimized Battery Charging feature. This system learns daily routine patterns to hold off on charging past 80 percent until right before regular use. Users can check this feature by connecting their AirPods to an iPhone and navigating to Settings > AirPods > Battery. However, keeping the charging case on a wireless pad overnight is discouraged because the extra heat generated by wireless charging can degrade battery capacity faster.
Within the same iPhone or Apple Watch battery menu, users can also toggle charging notifications to receive alerts when the battery drops low or finishes charging. Under careful management, industry estimates indicate that AirPods batteries typically retain reliable capacity for roughly two to three years before performance begins to decline.
