The probability of an initial public offering from AI company Anthropic has declined on prediction market Kalshi following recent midterm election results and a broad market sell-off. Anthropic previously submitted a confidential IPO prospectus to the Securities and Exchange Commission in June.
Market Correction and Stock Volatility
The adjustment on Kalshi followed investor anxiety that Democratic victories in both legislative chambers might hinder data center construction, reducing the appeal of artificial intelligence investments. Concurrently, the Nasdaq Composite concluded Thursday in a market correction, closing over 10% below its recent peak. The S&P 500 dropped by 4.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by more than 1,800 points, representing a 3.4% decline.
Equities attempted a recovery on Friday, with the Nasdaq advancing 1.3% and the S&P 500 increasing 0.7%, while the Dow slipped 0.2%. Shares of Nvidia and Micron Technology each climbed approximately 4% on Friday following respective drops of 9% and 17% the previous day. Additionally, CoreWeave shares advanced over 2% on Friday morning after experiencing a decline of about 10% earlier in the week. Despite these partial rebounds, the affected equities recorded substantial losses over the week.
Regulatory Pressure on Data Centers
Political shifts also influenced market sentiment, highlighted by Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa. The incoming Democratic leader defeated three-term Republican incumbent Greg Abbott after campaigning on stricter regulations regarding data center development within the state.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Hinojosa stated, “We will have laws to protect Texans and we need to stop what we are doing with data centers until we have those protections.”
