Netflix is expanding the Stranger Things franchise with a brand-new live-action spinoff series scheduled to debut in 2028. The upcoming project has been officially titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure.
Plot and Production Details
While specific plot details remain limited, the upcoming series will explore a significantly earlier timeline. Netflix revealed that Other Worlds operates as a prequel set during the 1950s, taking place prior to the events of both the original television series and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Franchise creators Matt and Ross Duffer are returning for the project, alongside Stranger Things veteran Kate Trefry, who will take on the role of showrunner. Additionally, British filmmaker Joe Wright is attached to direct the opening three episodes of the series.
The Duffer brothers released a statement describing the production as familiar yet unexpected, noting it features a fresh environment, entirely new characters on both sides, alongside mysterious elements they were not yet permitted to disclose while moving forward with casting preparations.
Expanding the Franchise
The streaming platform has consistently explored avenues to maintain the longevity of its most influential intellectual property following the conclusion of the main series’ final season last year. Previous efforts included the animated spinoff Tales From ‘85, though the development of a major live-action series indicates a significantly larger investment in expanding the universe.
