London’s Leicester Square hosted the world premiere of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” on November 4, 2001, drawing crowds of enthusiastic fans and launching a cinematic phenomenon. Daniel Radcliffe, who starred as the young wizard at age 12, expressed amazement at the overwhelming reception from the public at the time, as reported by the BBC.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Success

The cinematic debut highlighted how rapidly the franchise grew following the publication of the first book by Britain’s Bloomsbury in June 1997. The initial print run consisted of just 500 hardcover copies alongside 5,000 paperbacks. First editions have since become valuable collectors’ items, with a hardcover copy fetching $400,000 at Heritage Auctions in mid-October, as reported by Deutsche Welle: DW.com.

The novel initially gained popularity through word of mouth among schoolchildren before receiving broader media attention after winning the Nestle Smarties Book Prize. With global sales exceeding 120 million copies, it stands as the best-selling title in the series and ranks among the top-selling novels in history.

Author Controversy and Divided Reactions

J.K. Rowling transitioned from a welfare-dependent single mother to a billionaire, but her public image in recent years has been heavily shaped by fierce debates over her positions on gender and transgender identity. In an October 21, 2026, website essay, Rowling reaffirmed her opposition to dominant trans activism, arguing that biological sex is an undeniable fact and expressing concern over single-sex spaces.

While critics label her statements transphobia, supporters view her stance as a protection of women’s rights. The ongoing dispute has fractured the fanbase. German YouTuber Kathrin Fricke, known for her parodies under the name Coldmirror, told the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that she can no longer watch the franchise in good conscience due to Rowling’s activism against transgender individuals.

Divisions extend to the original film cast. Main actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have publicly supported transgender people, whereas cast members Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter have defended Rowling’s freedom of expression.

Upcoming TV Series Adaptation

Warner Bros. is adapting the books into an upcoming HBO television series scheduled to premiere on December 25. The eight-episode first season adapts the inaugural book, offering expanded room for subplots, character growth, and daily life at Hogwarts compared to the original films.

The newly cast young trio features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Although J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer, HBO stated that her gender identity views will not influence the narrative.

Several cast members in the upcoming production have distanced themselves from the author. Severus Snape actor Paapa Essiedu signed an open letter backing transgender people, while Dumbledore actor John Lithgow and Hagrid actor Nick Frost have also publicly opposed Rowling’s views. Rowling stated she lacked both the power and the desire to remove Essiedu over the letter.

Concurrently, the brand’s commercial footprint continues to expand with the scheduled November 4 opening of Britain’s largest Harry Potter store in London. Warner Bros. stated that the two-story retail location spans more than 1,950 square meters.
