Israeli Strikes in Gaza Kill Eight, Including a Young Child

Israeli air strikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals, among them a four-year-old child, as reported by hospital and interior ministry officials, despite an ongoing ceasefire that is a year old.

Airstrikes in Gaza City and Khan Younis

In northern Gaza City, hospital officials stated that a missile strike struck a gathering of civilians near Cairo School located in the Al-Rimal district, resulting in three fatalities, which included the young boy. Further south in Khan Younis, the interior ministry, operated by Hamas, reported that a drone strike hit a group of police officers performing routine duties in the Al-Mawasi sector, killing five.

The Israeli military stated that it executed two operations targeting individuals it characterized as military operatives, though it has not yet shared evidence or additional details.

Mourning and Ceasefire Realities

Footage outside Shifa Hospital in Gaza City captured a gathering of men praying beside two body bags and the small body of the child wrapped in a white towel. Ali Oweis told AFP news agency that his son and grandchild were killed while sitting in their tent without causing any disturbance.

Footage from Nasser hospital in Khan Younis showed women mourning over body bags placed on the floor. The interior ministry identified the five slain officers, aged 23 to 53, describing the operation as a severe massacre.

Although a ceasefire was established in Gaza in October of the previous year, daily Israeli air raids have persisted. Gaza’s health ministry, whose statistics are deemed reliable by the United Nations, reports that 1,580 people have died since the truce began, while Israel maintains its operations focus on Hamas.

Simultaneously, a peace proposal for the territory, facilitated by the Trump administration, remains stalled. The initial ceasefire agreement involved the release of thousands of Palestinian detainees by Israel in exchange for the 48 remaining hostages in Gaza, alongside terms to conclude the hostilities.

The broader conflict commenced following the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. Total casualties in Gaza have reached 74,594 since the war started, according to local health authorities.
