During a virtual taste-test briefing, a reviewer rushed to set up the new Keurig Alta brewer with only 10 minutes to spare. The machine was fully installed, connected to Wi-Fi, and ready to brew in under seven minutes, showcasing an intuitive setup process for a first-of-its-kind coffee machine, as reported by WIRED.
Design and Features
The Keurig Alta features curved white lines, a sleek spaceship-like aesthetic, and comes in black and stainless steel options. Unlike cheaper holiday-discount Keurigs, this device feels high-end throughout. It includes a metal cup holder, a magnetic cup and whisk for the steam wand, a slim and reversible reservoir bin, and drip trays that tuck away without adding extra bulk.
Two compartments sit on top of the machine. The right side features a standard Keurig K-Cup basket with a piercing needle at the bottom, while the left side houses a new compartment for Keurig AltaRounds, which cost $11 for a box of eight. These pucks represent a novel coffee technology from the brand, positioned at a high price point that remains reasonable compared to dedicated in-home espresso makers.
The AltaRound Technology
Resembling the ground coffee pucks used in traditional espresso portafilters, each AltaRound is coated in a seaweed-derived substance. This layer acts as a binder that allows the pucks to bloom inside the machine. Four varieties are currently available—dark roast, medium roast, a caramel blend, and double-shot espresso—with light-roast and single-shot espresso options scheduled for release soon.
Every AltaRound features a stamped QR code that the machine’s left touchscreen compartment reads instantly when the puck is inserted.
