Andy Burnham stated that he hopes the major losses suffered by Donald Trump’s Republican party in the US elections will create an opportunity for the global community to concentrate on ending the Iran war and relieving cost of living pressures.
Focus on Cost of Living and Global Conflicts
Speaking in an interview at the Commonwealth summit in Antigua, Burnham was asked if he feared the election outcome might render Trump more unpredictable. He responded that President Trump has accepted the results and expressed his belief that the world now has a chance to unite around the issue affecting everyone, which is the cost of living.
Burnham noted that this issue has been his central focus during his first three months in Downing Street and that steps have already been taken. However, he added that he cannot reduce people’s cost of living pressures until the Middle East conflict and the conflict in Ukraine, initiated by Russia, are resolved.
He emphasized that these are the matters requiring immediate attention, expressing hope that the world now has a moment to address them. He confirmed that he will urge everyone to do so during his calls with leaders.
Global Patterns and International Relations
When asked if he viewed the elections as part of a global retreat of rightwing populism, Burnham declined to make that claim, stating instead that people want to see the world unite and focus on matters that genuinely affect them, which he believes is the message delivered by US voters.
He urged a laser-like focus on cost of living issues, noting a worldwide recognition that individual nations cannot resolve these challenges alone or amidst division between countries. Burnham outlined his work as prime minister to introduce new approaches in the Middle East—supported by foreign secretary announcements regarding sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank—as well as new approaches to Europe and the Commonwealth to help restore economic growth and reduce financial pressures.
Regarding whether Britain will push for de-escalation in the Iran war, Burnham confirmed he will work toward de-escalation and a resolution, aiming specifically to see the Strait of Hormuz fully reopened.
