Cast members of Married at First Sight UK have expressed a mixture of relief, tears, and sadness after Channel 4 decided to axe the reality television programme. The cancellation follows a BBC Panorama investigation that revealed serious allegations, including rape and non-consensual sexual acts, made by female participants.
Reactions from Cast Members
One woman, who alleged she was raped on the show, told BBC News she felt delighted and relieved that no one else would experience the same ordeal. Another female participant who made a similar allegation was in tears, describing a sense of consuming relief while adding that she was astounded an external review was necessary for Channel 4 to cancel the series. She criticized suggestions from the review that the show could continue with safety measures like a safe word, panic button, or lockable bathroom, calling the ideas absolute insanity.
Shona Manderson, the only woman identified from the allegations regarding a non-consensual sex act, told BBC News via telephone that her primary emotion was relief that their voices had been heard. She stated that speaking out was difficult, but knowing their voices helped drive change made it worthwhile. None of the three women who contributed to the BBC investigation had received advance notice about the cancellation.
Other cast members contacted BBC News with mixed views. While several welcomed the removal of the series, others argued it did not go far enough and demanded greater accountability. One anonymous participant emphasized that the production is not simply a television show for those involved, but involves real people and real emotions. April Banbury, a participant from the 2022 series whose on-screen husband was arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour before the police investigation was dropped, told BBC News she was glad MAFS was cancelled and believed it should have happened years ago. Her former partner has called the allegations false.
Another anonymous cast member stated that participants want answers, accountability, and an explanation of how the situation was allowed to happen. Lia Perin, a partner at Taylor Hampton and lawyer representing several participants, told the BBC that cancelling the programme may prevent future harm, but does not resolve questions about the treatment of past contestants. She added that Channel 4 owes them answers rather than simple assurances that lessons have been learned.
Conversely, some former participants shared positive experiences on social media and expressed sadness over the cancellation. Jay Howard from the 2023 series said the show brought her friendships and opportunities, while 2021 bride Marilyse Corrigan stated she looks back on that chapter of her life with fond memories. Lara Eyre from the 2022 series told BBC News that the situation highlights safeguarding concerns in reality television, calling it a real shame for fans and for those who filmed this year’s unaired series, acknowledging the format involved both traumatic and positive aspects.
Channel 4 Response and Unanswered Questions
Following the review, Channel 4 has only released a summary of findings rather than the full report. Questions remain regarding what the broadcaster did when first warned about serious allegations by the production company, why the investigation took so long, and why action was only taken after BBC Panorama raised the alarm.
When BBC News put these questions to Channel 4 boss Priya Dogra, she stated that the broadcaster handled incidents appropriately as they arose, and that the review supported this. In a statement to BBC News, Channel 4 said its review did not seek to adjudicate on serious allegations of wrongdoing against past contributors because those matters remain for the relevant authorities. The broadcaster added that the review found no breach of Ofcom’s broadcasting code in how Channel 4 and production company CPL handled issues raised at the time.
Channel 4 bosses are scheduled to appear before the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee on 17 November. Meanwhile, an ongoing Ofcom investigation into the show continues, and a male cast member was arrested on suspicion of rape in June. Channel 4 has also confirmed it will not broadcast international editions of the format, such as MAFS Australia, in the future.
