A completely free and open-source application called Purge offers a fast overview of hard drive storage usage on Mac computers while providing methods to reclaim space. The software contains zero advertisements or upgrade prompts and can even remove offline Apple Intelligence models from macOS 27 to save over 10 gigabytes.
How Purge Works
Computers naturally accumulate digital debris over time through forgotten downloads, media files, and caches. Caches store downloaded data to improve loading speeds, but they frequently remain active longer than necessary, while uninstalled applications often leave behind caches and settings that consume storage capacity.
Purge utilizes predefined lists identifying files that are completely safe to clear out alongside protected lists containing essential system documents and personal files that the software refuses to touch. To ensure safety, the application moves deleted items directly to the Trash rather than erasing them permanently, allowing users to restore files if unexpected issues occur. After downloading and installing the program, users simply launch it to view a breakdown of their storage distribution.
Cleaning Features and Tools
Users can select a button to automatically clean safe items, though careful inspection is recommended. The software displays a list of cache files that can be periodically cleared without risk. Additionally, users can remove Apple Aerial screen savers, which consume significant storage capacity despite modern screensaver habits.
A developer tools section allows users of Homebrew to remove unneeded cached installation files. Another utility identifies the largest files on the computer, typically consisting of forgotten videos and media that can be archived elsewhere.
An application uninstaller tool goes beyond standard Finder deletion by removing the program alongside all associated settings, caches, and downloads. A dedicated leftover scanner detects leftover data from previously deleted programs that waste gigabytes of storage.
Removing Apple Intelligence Models
Modern macOS versions come with preloaded offline artificial intelligence models that support notification summaries, writing suggestions, and upgraded Siri capabilities. Because recent operating system updates removed the direct toggle to disable these features entirely, Purge includes a specialized removal tool.
Users can view installed AI models within the application and click a delete button to remove them completely while blocking macOS from automatically reinstalling them. These cleanup capabilities make the utility an effective option for managing drive capacity.
