AI giant Anthropic files for an IPO that could break records

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, creator of the Claude AI models, has taken a major step toward an initial public offering that analysts project could rank among the largest in history. The company submitted final regulatory paperwork on Monday for an IPO under the ticker symbol ANT, with reports estimating a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.

Prospectus Highlights Rapid Growth and Financials

Anthropic filed a public registration statement, known as a Form S-1, with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Launched five years ago by former OpenAI researchers led by Dario Amodei due to safety concerns with rival platforms, Anthropic has grown into a major industry juggernaut. The prospectus did not specify the number of shares to be offered or the price range.

The filing outlined dramatic growth across revenue, income, and losses. Revenue for the first half of the year surged 1,300% to $16.3 billion, while adjusted operating income reached $1.6 billion, compared to a loss of $1.8 billion during the previous year. Raj Joshi, senior vice president in Moody’s corporate finance group, described the shift in adjusted operating income to positive territory as a strong positive for the AI ecosystem in an emailed statement to NPR.

Despite this, Anthropic recorded a net loss of nearly $81 billion from January to June, up from $13 billion during the same period last year, and has not yet turned an annual profit. The company stated in its prospectus that AI will rapidly transform every sector of the global economy on a scale surpassing industrialization, electricity, semiconductors, and the internet.

Market Volatility and Regulatory Challenges

The IPO filing arrives during a volatile period for AI stocks, as investors weigh market enthusiasm against safety concerns and massive financial outlays. Jim Angel, an associate professor and markets specialist at Georgetown University, noted that going public provides growth capital and allows existing investors to cash out, though he cautioned about potential market volatility and bubble concerns. Angel added that it makes sense for Anthropic to list shares now to secure the highest possible valuation while market conditions remain strong.

Anthropic’s public offering could happen as soon as November. Competitor OpenAI is also planning an IPO, though CEO Sam Altman recently ruled out a listing this year due to swirling AI safety concerns. Anthropic’s prospectus itself highlighted risks, including the possibility that AI models could develop faster than safety measures or take harmful autonomous actions, alongside potential political backlash and regulatory scrutiny.

The company has already faced significant controversies, including a clash with the Pentagon over the military use of its models for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. After the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply chain risk, the company filed lawsuits in two federal district courts, and those legal battles remain ongoing.

U.S. stock indexes traded higher on Monday following the morning announcement of the IPO filing.
