Elon Musk spent nearly $500 million to elect Republican candidates in the recent midterm elections, according to Federal Election Commission filings reported by Forbes, but suffered massive losses as Democrats secured major victories. As the election’s single largest individual donor by a vast margin, the Tesla CEO outspent the second-place billionaire couple Dick and Liz Uihlein by more than three times.
Heavy Spending and Major Losses in Texas
A significant portion of his funds, totaling around $225 million, was directed to his adopted home state of Texas, as reported by CNBC. Despite the heavy investment, both the governorship and a Senate seat flipped to Democrats by large margins, alongside numerous House and state congressional seats.
Nationwide, Musk supported Republican candidates across 106 House and Senate races by channeling cash to various Super PACs and specific campaigns. Out of those races, 18 candidates secured victories, primarily in heavily secure Republican districts, while 45 candidates lost and 43 races remained uncalled, with many leaning toward Democrats. Prominent defeats for his backed candidates also took place in states such as Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Kansas, and Iowa.
Pre-Election Claims and Future Outlook
Before the vote, Musk expressed extreme urgency, warning that a Democratic victory would spell the end of democracy and claiming that Texas Senate-elect James Talarico would affect children’s gender identities. Following the results, Musk posted on X, “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time 🤷♂️.”
Despite the widespread losses of his favored candidates, Musk maintains an estimated net worth of around $898 billion, leaving him with ample resources to fund future political campaigns.
