Elon Musk’s Millions Fail to Deliver Texas for Republicans

Democrat James Talarico secured a resounding victory in the Texas Senate race, delivering a major upset for Republicans and billionaire Elon Musk during the midterm elections.

Massive Financial Backing Fails to Secure Texas Seat

According to the Financial Times, Musk’s political action committee contributed $47m to Republican candidate Ken Paxton’s campaign, in addition to $158m given to the Senate Leadership Fund in September. Despite the substantial funding, the seat turned Democratic for the first time since 1988.

In his acceptance speech, Talarico stated that they had proven that all the money in the world was no match for the people of Texas. Musk responded on X with a joke, writing that his election-interfering space lasers apparently did not work this time.

While the stock market rose broadly following the election results on Wednesday morning, shares in Musk’s companies Tesla and SpaceX dropped by 4.9% and 3.4% respectively. Throughout the campaign trail, numerous Democrats had openly criticized the expansion of artificial intelligence data centres.

Broader Political Impact and Campaign Spending

Talarico’s win served as a pivotal turning point in the midterms, contributing to the Democrats securing control of the US Congress through a wave of national victories. Musk has increasingly established Texas as the operational center for his businesses, housing Tesla’s headquarters in Austin alongside SpaceX’s Starbase facility.

Alongside financial backing through external groups, the X owner utilized his social media platform to circulate conspiracy theories regarding Talarico after the Democrat briefly stepped away from campaigning in October, posting that something was deeply wrong with him. Talarico answered online that a political system permitting a trillionaire to purchase a personal US senator was fundamentally flawed.

As the top individual donor for the midterms overall, the SpaceX owner funneled an estimated $446m into supporting Republican candidates. This funding was channeled through Super Pacs, which are permitted to raise unlimited amounts while remaining barred from direct coordination or contributions to candidates. Traditional groups, parties, and individuals remain subject to strict legal limits on direct donations, whereas Super Pacs operate independently through expenditures like candidate advertisements.

Having previously emerged as a leading donor for the Republican Party in 2024 by investing hundreds of millions into Donald Trump’s successful presidential campaign, Musk’s enormous financial contributions ultimately failed to yield a similar outcome for Paxton.
