What does the H+ symbol mean on your Samsung phone?

When using a Samsung Galaxy phone, users often notice various icons on the top of the screen, such as a shield for battery protection or a triangle for Data Saver mode. Another common indicator is the H+ symbol, which shows that the device is connected to an HSPA+ network.

Understanding HSPA and the H+ Symbol

HSPA stands for High-Speed Packet Access, representing a network technology that delivers data speeds up to 21 Mbps, while HSPA+ is an evolved version offering twice that capability. Real-world speeds on these mobile networks typically range between 3.5 and 14 Mbps, though rural locations can experience slower rates dropping down to 1.5 Mbps. By comparison, standard LTE speeds span from 12 to 40 Mbps, and LTE Advanced reaches up to 220 Mbps.

Certain regions and mobile carriers have not yet completed the transition to LTE. Older 3G cellular radio technology known as CDMA has been enhanced with HSPA+ to support heavier data demands until providers finish upgrading local infrastructure. Serving as a cost-effective short-term upgrade, HSPA+ ensures customers receive adequate service while carriers plan major network overhauls. While HSPA operates similarly, the H+ designation signifies the enhanced version that delivers faster connections and improved response times.

When and Why You See HSPA+

Users typically encounter the H+ network indicator when traveling through rural or remote areas where infrastructure has not yet been upgraded to LTE. Another potential cause involves using an older Samsung Galaxy device lacking support for Voice over LTE, a feature enabling calls over 4G and 5G networks. Because nearly all Samsung Galaxy models released since the S4 support VoLTE, this second scenario only affects owners of devices more than a decade old.

Cellular providers are gradually phasing out older network technologies. For instance, Bell Mobility in Canada has scheduled a complete shutdown of its 3G and HSPA network by March 1, 2027. As carriers continue upgrading legacy towers, newer Samsung Galaxy phones will connect directly to 4G, 5G, and LTE, rendering the H and H+ symbols in the Android status bar obsolete.
