Gravity is gradually pulling the famed Hubble Space Telescope closer to its eventual demise with every passing day. Although Hubble faces no immediate danger of burning up in the atmosphere, its operational timeline will expire in the early to mid-2030s unless its orbit receives a boost. To prevent this, NASA is currently accepting proposals from the private sector to explore potential rescue solutions.
Exploring Cost-Effective Lifespan Extensions
In a published statement on the NASA website, Administrator Jared Isaacman explained that the telescope still has significant scientific work ahead and the agency must examine all reasonable opportunities to maintain its operations. He stated that exploring innovative and cost-effective methods to prolong the lifespan of an existing orbital asset is an obligation owed to American taxpayers and the scientific community.
According to Isaacman, extending the mission of Hubble translates to additional discoveries, expanded scientific output, and increased opportunities to broaden human understanding of the universe. The space agency will keep the Request for Information open until November 30th at 3 PM Eastern Time.
