Tottenham midfielder Drew Spence expressed immense pride after setting the all-time appearance record in the Women’s Super League. The 34-year-old reached her 217th appearance in the competition when she started in Sunday’s match against Birmingham City, surpassing the previous record held by former Chelsea captain Millie Bright.

Reflecting on Longevity and Career Milestones

Spence told BBC Sport that achieving the milestone is a proud moment not only for herself but also for her family. She noted that the record reflects years of hard work, personal sacrifices, and maintaining motivation across multiple seasons.

Having spent 14 years at Chelsea before moving to Tottenham in 2022, Spence won five league titles and four FA Cup trophies. Former Chelsea teammate Erin Cuthbert praised her as an absolute warrior on the pitch and a great teammate off it, highlighting her technical skills and leadership.

Physical Conditioning and Leadership at Tottenham

Appointed as Tottenham captain in the summer, Spence has become a central figure under manager Martin Ho. She noted that she is currently in the best physical shape of her career, aided by better nutrition and recovery methods.

While she admitted to having personal regrets about not understanding how to prepare her body earlier in her career, Spence believes those lessons helped her succeed at Tottenham. Manager Martin Ho praised her ability to adapt physically, technically, and tactically, stating that she has earned massive respect at the club.

Future Outlook and Continued Ambitions

Ho expressed confidence in the midfielder’s longevity, noting that she can continue playing for as long as she wants because of her sharpness, fitness, and intelligence. Spence also represented Jamaica in 2023, participating in an open letter calling for systemic improvements within the Jamaica Football Federation.

Looking ahead, Spence has no immediate plans to retire and aims to keep improving and enjoying the game for as long as possible.
