How long does the new Apple TV last?

The new Apple TV 4K launches on November 13 at a price of $299, featuring an A19 chip, an updated Siri Remote, and hands-free Siri controls. As buyers weigh the cost of this streaming device, the question arises of how many years it will last before needing an upgrade.

Apple TV Software Support History

Apple does not offer an official guarantee regarding how many tvOS updates or years of support its streaming boxes will receive. Past device histories serve as the primary indicator for longevity, as older Apple TVs have historically secured major software updates spanning eight to 10 years, followed by extended security patches.

The Apple TV HD from 2015 and the initial Apple TV 4K from 2017 both received updates to tvOS 26 in 2025, alongside security patches in tvOS 26.6 in July 2026. This timeline delivered roughly 10 years of major software updates for the HD version and eight years for the first-generation 4K model, plus supplementary security support.

Support for those older models concluded in September 2026 with the release of tvOS 27. The compatibility list for the new operating system starts with the second-generation Apple TV 4K released in 2021, leaving the 2015 and 2017 editions unable to run the latest software. Apple has not yet clarified whether those legacy boxes will receive additional security patches, and there is no formal guarantee that the newest Apple TV 4K will achieve 10 years of support.

By comparison, Amazon guarantees a minimum of four years of security updates for Fire TV devices purchased directly from the company or until their published support date. While this differs from major operating system upgrades, Fire TV buyers receive a documented support deadline.

When to Replace Your Apple TV

Ineligibility for the latest tvOS version does not immediately render an Apple TV obsolete. Streaming apps like Netflix continue to support both the Apple TV HD and the first-generation Apple TV 4K despite their exclusion from tvOS 27. However, app support may shift if developers elevate their minimum software requirements over time.

Device performance serves as a more practical metric for replacement than chronological age. Upgrades become logical when menus slow down significantly, applications start crashing, or essential services cease to function. Security considerations also play a role, particularly if the device operates as a smart home hub and stops receiving security patches.

The steep $299 price tag makes upgrading a heavier investment. Apple’s Siri AI beta runs on the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer models—provided the home administrator uses an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad—meaning users do not need the latest hardware solely for Siri AI. While the 2026 Apple TV 4K introduces upgrades such as the A19 processor and built-in microphones for hands-free operation, replacing an existing, functioning setup may not be necessary for everyone.

For damaged or misplaced hardware, users can substitute the Siri Remote with an iPhone rather than purchasing an entirely new system. The current Siri Remote costs $59 and maintains compatibility with all Apple TV 4K generations as well as the 2015 Apple TV HD.
