US Representative Haley Stevens has endorsed Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race, dealing a significant blow to her fellow Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.
A Surprising Endorsement Amid Primary Tensions
Stevens surprised party officials by appearing alongside Rogers at a Detroit church service. The move came just two days before the election that will determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill, as ongoing tensions between Stevens and El-Sayed reached a breaking point.
“I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the US Senate. Today, I do not belong to Abdul’s campaign,” Stevens stated in a video shared on X.
Fallout From the Democratic Primary
The unexpected support for Rogers—who is endorsed by US President Donald Trump in the closely contested race—followed an incident where Stevens was uninvited from a joint campaign event held on the same day with El-Sayed. El-Sayed had previously defeated Stevens by a narrow margin in the August primary.
“Who we are as Michiganders is not hate, and [that] is not what we are getting out of our Democratic nominee right now,” Stevens explained.
