French authorities reported multiple clashes between protesters and police across several cities on Saturday as hundreds of thousands gathered nationwide to demonstrate against living costs and conditions in schools.
Protests and Clashes Nationwide
According to the French Interior Ministry, 320,000 individuals joined the demonstrations nationwide, which included 70,000 participants in Paris. While the ministry stated that the marches mostly proceeded smoothly, it noted that radical elements in cities such as Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Marseille tried entering downtown areas to commit vandalism and looting.
Marseille experienced street fires that brought out firefighters, while Rennes and Toulouse also witnessed clashes with law enforcement. Following a largely peaceful beginning, police deployed tear gas in Paris and Lyon during the late afternoon, as reported by French media and live broadcasts, when tensions heightened near the southern outskirts of the capital.
Footage broadcast by BFMTV captured fireworks exploding and incendiary devices hurled at riot police officers, leaving several caught in the flames.
Security Measures and Arrests
The Paris police prefecture conducted over 1,200 security checks at train stations and surrounding zones early Saturday to screen for potential troublemakers. These checks sought to stop protesters from carrying knives, fireworks, and other banned items into the rallies.
The prefecture added that law enforcement utilized all available aerial resources to supervise security, employing camera-equipped drones to stream live images across Paris. Police confirmed that more than 290 arrests took place nationwide throughout the day.
Official Warnings and Preparations
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez cautioned earlier in the day that the rallies presented a very high risk due to online calls for rioting and looting. Approximately 70,000 police officers and security personnel were stationed across the country to preserve order.
Authorities also worried that Halloween festivities might allow individuals to hide their identities while breaking the law. Officials redirected march routes in Paris and other urban centers away from downtown areas to protect public buildings and prevent looting.
In response, numerous shops boarded up their windows and implemented additional safety measures, while several cities enacted curfews and restrictions targeting specific zones and minors.
Background of the Mass Action
Saturday marked the third consecutive weekend of mass demonstrations. Last weekend saw a comparable security presence that mostly averted a recurrence of the destruction witnessed during protests on October 17.
Students have demonstrated for weeks over deficient staffing and resources in schools, and other groups joined the movement starting in mid-October primarily over escalating living costs. Trade unions, student bodies, and the grassroots Yellow Vest movement, which originated in France in 2018, organized the Saturday demonstrations.
