Google has successfully generated its first response from space using an artificial intelligence chip-equipped satellite. In a blog post published on Friday, the company announced that it booted up the satellite’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), enabling the on-board Gemma 4 model to complete a prompt by writing a haiku about being in space.
Space-Themed Prompts and Project Suncatcher
The generated poem read:
Blue marble below
Data streams in silent grace
Starlight feeds my core. ✨
Google reported that it also tested telemetry prompts and additional space-themed limericks during the trial. This experiment is part of Project Suncatcher, an initiative by Google that explores the possibility of eventually placing AI data centers in orbit. The satellite was launched earlier this month.
Future Testing and Upcoming Milestones
Google stated that it will proceed with further evaluations to measure how the TPUs handle radiation exposure and thermal stress in orbit. Verifying the reliability of space-based TPU workloads sets the foundation for the next objective, which involves launching twin interconnected satellites in 2027.
