Exclusive Details and Images of Akai MPC Sample Key

Akai recently teased its new MPC Sample Key on Instagram, announcing plans to open-source the device’s software to allow the modding community to customize it. While official pricing and release dates remain unannounced, The Verge has obtained exclusive images providing a closer look at the instrument’s features.

Design and Features

The Sample Key retains several controls from the standard MPC Sample, such as three context-sensitive encoders and a large main encoder. However, it is tailored for pitched sample playback instead of chopping drums, completely omitting the “chop” button found on the original model.

The inclusion of dedicated pitch and mod wheels points toward melodic performance. The device also incorporates buttons to adjust the octave range of the 25-key keyboard, alongside buttons marked “chord” and “arp” for chord playback modes and an arpeggiator. These options appear to take the place of the standard MPC Sample’s chop function.

Furthermore, the instrument features a dedicated looper designed for live performance and sound layering. It swaps out the Flex Beat effects of the original MPC Sample for a feature named “Swarm,” though details about its specific function are not yet available.

Similar to the first device in the Sample lineup, the Key includes a built-in microphone and speaker to facilitate all-in-one music production. Front-panel configuration options indicate that the Sample Key will feature CV outputs for modular synth integration, alongside MIDI capabilities.

The device features a 25-key keyboard layout.
