AO3 Suffers Major Outage: Fanfic Site Down for Weeks

October has brought significant disruption for readers and writers using the fan-run fiction platform Archive of Our Own, widely known as AO3. Following intermittent issues throughout the month, what started as a routine 12-hour unplanned maintenance window has escalated into a shutdown lasting several weeks.

Security Incident Triggers Multi-Week Shutdown

The platform is managed by the Organization for Transformative Works. In an update published Thursday on the official status page and distributed through Bluesky and Tumblr, administrators announced that restoring service will require a minimum of two weeks, and potentially up to four weeks.

Administrators stated they hope to restore the platform in a degraded state sooner if possible, though temporary shutdowns might still occur until the issue is fully resolved. This announcement followed an initial notice 12 hours earlier that predicted a brief maintenance period.

An Organization for Transformative Works representative told CNET News that the extended downtime stems from a security incident whose scope remains under evaluation. The representative confirmed that the disruption is unrelated to recent PHP security vulnerabilities because the archive operates on Ruby on Rails.

According to the official status update, the platform detected evidence of a security incident and initiated an investigation to determine its full impact. The site will stay offline while responders investigate and address the findings.

Data Safety and Alternative Platforms

The update reassures users that no content has been deleted. While administrators believe user data remains uncompromised, they cannot completely rule out the possibility and advise users to update their passwords if they reused credentials across multiple websites. Financial data from donors is stored securely in a separate, disconnected database.

Users seeking alternative platforms while the site remains offline can explore options like Wattpad and FanFiction. Meanwhile, online communities on Reddit—such as the r/DeletedFanfiction subreddit—alongside users on Bluesky and other networks, are actively sharing downloaded works and crowdsourcing alternative reading options.
