Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged in an interview that public negativity surrounding artificial intelligence will intensify. Speaking on the Colin and Samir podcast during a discussion about Instagram’s new features, Mosseri stated that anti-AI sentiment extends far beyond young people and creative professionals.
Rising Frustration and Industry Concerns
Mosseri predicted that anger and anxiety regarding artificial intelligence will escalate. He noted that the trend involves a mix of grounded and ungrounded concerns that will create difficulties for many individuals over the next few years.
Addressing content visibility, Mosseri explained that Instagram does not intentionally rank artificial intelligence creators differently, but questioned the platform’s handling of content quality. He remarked that platforms likely do not rank artificial intelligence content as effectively as non-artificial intelligence material, given the volume of low-quality output.
Mosseri also discussed the broader fears held by users and creators alike. He pointed to worries regarding content ownership, model training, safety, and potential job displacement affecting engineers, mathematicians, and content creators. Ultimately, he suggested these anxieties stem from a fundamental fear of being left behind.
Platform Regulations and Content Labels
Instagram introduced labels for artificial intelligence accounts earlier this year and began penalizing artificial intelligence-generated profiles in August. Despite these measures, deceptive content such as celebrity deepfakes continues to present challenges for the platform.
Addressing the presence of artificial intelligence media, Mosseri explained that enforcing a total ban on the platform is impractical. Instead, the platform now requires artificial intelligence accounts to apply labels so users can determine whether the material they view is authentic.
