Rangers manager Derek McInnes is one match away from securing a first major trophy at Ibrox after Ryan Naderi’s late winner defeated a stubborn Aberdeen side at Hampden Park. The victory sets up a final appearance in December against either Hearts or Hibernian as the former Hearts, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen manager pursues only his second major trophy in over 800 matches.

Despite overseeing an 11-game unbeaten run, McInnes refused to be completely satisfied and called for higher standards from his squad. He stated to BBC Scotland that getting the club into a cup final was job done by hook or by crook, but emphasized that performance levels must rise.

Decision-Making and Attacking Efficiency

Rangers have built their recent success on a solid defense, keeping seven clean sheets during their unbeaten streak, with Olwethu Makhanya delivering consistent performances at centre-half. In the semi-final, Rangers dominated with 74% possession and registered 25 shots on goal, but managed only five shots on target before Naderi scored the decisive goal in the 83rd minute.

McInnes criticized his team’s efficiency, pointing out that having only five shots on target from 25 attempts is not good enough and reflects poor decision-making. He added that while getting into the final is crucial, the team has an obligation to improve their performances moving forward.

Ryan Naderi’s Impact

Naderi arrived from the German third tier in February and struggled initially, leading to doubts about his ability to lead the Rangers attack. However, his Hampden winner adds to a growing collection of crucial goals, which includes a winner in a 1-0 league victory at Celtic Park. His tally of eight goals and overall impact have been vital while Lawrence Shankland and Youssef Chermiti have been absent.

Former Ibrox midfielder Andy Halliday noted that Naderi has completely transformed this season, combining a strong work ethic with goals and effectiveness in the final third. McInnes also praised the Czech Republic forward, describing him as a player who thrives on service and needs teammates to deliver more quality balls into the box.

The Expectation for Silverware

At Rangers, the clear demand is to win trophies, a feat achieved only three times since 2012. McInnes stressed the importance of reaching finals consistently, noting that arriving at Hampden to compete for silverware must become the norm for the club every year.

Reaching the final helps quiet external pressure and provides supporters with a sense of anticipation and a feel-good factor around the club. McInnes concluded that every team possesses the capacity to improve, and he firmly believes his current squad can reach a higher level.
