Newly promoted Premier League clubs Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City have all enjoyed positive starts to the current campaign following their promotion. Together, the three clubs have accumulated 31 points from their opening nine games, marking the 13th-highest combined tally for promoted sides at this stage in league history.

Coventry City bounce back from tough start

Coventry City faced a brutal introduction to the top flight after winning the Championship title last season, losing their first four matches by a combined score of 10-0 under manager Frank Lampard. A 5-0 defeat against Brighton left the Sky Blues at the bottom of the table by the end of August. However, Lampard’s side responded by winning three of their next five games, including victories over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, and a 3-1 win against Sunderland that lifted them to 15th place.

The club invested heavily during the summer transfer window, spending more than £140 million on 12 permanent signings. The squad overhaul brought in club-record signing Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, Sidiki Cherif, along with Premier League veterans Loum Tchaouna and Taiwo Awoniyi. Midfielder Jack Rudoni told BBC Sport that the squad maintained their belief throughout the difficult opening period, acknowledging that the season will feature ups and downs.

Ipswich Town show resilience

Ipswich Town returned to the top flight after securing promotion as Championship runners-up, following a brief relegation back down in the 2024-25 season. Manager Gary O’Neil strengthened the squad significantly over the summer, notably securing the return of Julio Enciso, who previously played on loan at Portman Road. Enciso has played a key role this season, contributing goals and assists in crucial matches against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Hull City.

Following a 2-2 draw with Hull, where Ipswich fought back from behind for the second consecutive match, O’Neil praised his team’s resilience. As reported by BBC Match of the Day, O’Neil stated that his players showed great character to recover from a 2-1 deficit against a very strong Hull side.

Hull City make an early impact

Hull City began their first Premier League campaign since 2017 with a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United on the opening weekend. Under manager Sergej Jakirovic, the Tigers continued their strong form with a 1-0 win against Coventry and respectable draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea. Although they have collected only three points from their last four matches following their first defeat, the club sits alongside Ipswich on 11 points.

Historical statistics offer encouragement to all three newcomers, as every promoted team since the 2010-11 season that has earned at least 11 points from their first nine games has successfully avoided relegation.
