Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has announced that its AI models have achieved several scientific discoveries across mathematics, computer science, and physics. The San Francisco-based firm stated that the breakthroughs involve harmonic analysis, complexity theory, and quantum field theory.

Solving Long-Standing Mathematical Questions

Among the reported findings, OpenAI stated that its AI models successfully proved the local smoothing conjecture across all spatial dimensions for the first time. The proposition is a central element of harmonic analysis, a mathematical discipline focused on how complex signals and functions break down into elementary waves. Researchers had previously only managed to prove the conjecture in three spatial dimensions.

In computer science, OpenAI reported that its models disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis, which relates to the time needed to solve complex computational problems. Furthermore, in quantum field theory, the models provided a mathematically rigorous proof for the existence of quantum chromodynamics, which studies interactions between quarks and gluons.

Impact on Theoretical Mathematics

Alex Iosevich, a professor of mathematics at the University of Rochester specializing in harmonic analysis, characterized the AI’s success with the local smoothing conjecture as a historic milestone.

“The conjecture was formulated by my PhD adviser, Chris Sogge, so it is near and dear to my heart, and the news was a shock at first,” Iosevich told Al Jazeera.

Iosevich expressed optimism that the broader scientific enterprise would make major advances due to AI tools. However, he also noted that many theoretical mathematicians expect their discipline to change dramatically.

“I feel a twinge of sadness as a result,” Iosevich said, though he added that he believes those feelings will soon transform into an appreciation for how rapidly complex mathematical problems can now be solved.

Data Distribution and Industry Context

To analyze the raw research data, the $852 billion startup reached out to external scientists who acted as experts to guide the findings into academic understanding. OpenAI explained that the teams involved chose different strategies for releasing the results. The groups managing the mathematics and computer science findings decided to publish the data immediately, whereas the physics team deferred release to draft their own interpretation first.

OpenAI acknowledged that these distribution methods involve trade-offs between contextualizing research with specialists and creating information asymmetry among the broader academic community. The announcement is part of a growing trend of AI-driven scientific claims, following a recent announcement by rival firm Anthropic regarding a novel enzyme, which drew varied reactions from the scientific community over its overall significance.
