Ride Metro Hot Lanes

  • Metro HOT lanes in Houston let drivers without any passengers (in single occupant vehicles) use HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes for a toll
  • HOV and HOT lanes will be open 7 days a week as part of a three month trial
  • Single occupant drivers will pay $1 on weekends and evenings.

The Metro System in Houston consists of over 100 bus routes (that make nearly 10,000 stops), three light rail stops, and express lanes all across the city. Like many cities, they have HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes available for vehicles carrying multiple passengers. To reward carpooling, these lanes are often much faster than those on the rest of the roadway. If single passenger vehicles are interested, they can pay a fee to travel in these “HOT” lanes (high occupancy toll). You can find these lanes on I-45 North (North Freeway), US 59 South (Southwest Freeway) and US 290 West (Northwest Freeway). Metro Hot Lane corridors are I-45 South, I-45 North, US 59 South,US 59 North, and US 290. To travel in a toll lane, you will need one of the following toll tags:a  METRO HOT Lanes Toll Tag, a Harris County EZ TAG, a TX DOT Toll Tag, a TX TAG Toll Tag, or a Dallas NTTA Toll Tag.

In addition, these HOT lance are staying open a little longer on weeknights. They will be available to use for three more hours closing at 11 p.m. instead of 8 p.m. So if you’re in downtown Houston for a late night at work, a ball game or other special event, you can get home quickly by using one of these lanes.
